Interested in Jazz? Perhaps you would love to come, enjoy, listen or even perform your music in a relaxed, inclusive, supportive atmosphere.

The Hokianga Jazz Club usually meets the last Sunday of each month, from 2 pm - 4 pm
unless otherwise advised. Details for each month and any updates to times or venues will be posted on this website. Look out for Jazz club gig posters!

Most of our events have been held at Omapere, overlooking the Hokianga Harbour entrance. We have also been to Kohukohu, Rawene, Mangamuka and are always keen to explore new venues to make the HJC more accessible to others. So please keep an eye on our Next Jazz Session calendar!

There is also the opportunity to participate in the open mic time or just 'kick back' and relax to some smooth sounds.

'Hokianga Time' is a term often used in our area, and now there is another one to add ~ 'Hokianga Jazz' ~ our own unique blend! All local and visiting musicians are welcomed. Come and jam and have fun!

The 28th and 29th January, will see the bi annual Ngaphui Festival (Kaikohe) light up the northern skies with song and celebrations. The Hokianga Jazz Club has ear tagged this event as one to attend and absorb the culture and entertainments and as such encourage others to mark this on their calendar.   We look forward to our next HJC session.

To mark our first year, the Hokianga Jazz Club 2011 A.G.M. was held on Saturday, 24th September, at the Schooner Cafe, Omapere.

The October Jazz session was held on a sparkling spring afternoon on the deck of The Copthorne, Omapere. It is always great to see the various musos enjoying themselves and sounding just wonderful as always. Thanks to performers Marcel, Chris, Nopera, Tipene, Jake, Sarah and Terry, plus everyone for making this so special ~ here are a few snaps and a video for all to share and enjoy!

Spring was in the air at Maungamuka when the Hokianga Jazz Club performed on the north side hosted by Tautoko Radio Station. We would like to give thanks to all whom participated, to make this such an awesome day.

JULY 31st Session @ The Copthorne, Omapere

A good crowd of Hokianga musicians and music-lovers made the most of a fine winters day by gathering at The Copthorne Omapere for the July session of the HJC...

June 2011 @ The Schooner Cafe, Omapere

The Hokianga Jazz Club celebrated Matariki with an enjoyable, inclusive, afternoon of music at The Schooner, overlooking a wintery Hokianga Harbour. Regulars Nopera and Tipene from Waihongia were joined by Marcel, on flute and sax to kick things off. Mahina once again arrived to complement the musos with her wonderful vocals. Diane sang a couple of numbers while Seabourne and the audience joined in with percussion. A guest today was the legendary Tommy Ferguson from the north side, whose vast experience with guitar, vocals and encouragement of audience participation was greatly appreciated. Also, thanks to Eva from Kohukohu on guitar and vocals who added to the festive atmosphere and to Sarah on keyboard ~ thanks! Such a variety of styles ~ so much local talent to enjoy ~ with more to come out of the woodwork yet! Hokianga Jazz Club 'rocks' !!!!
Everyone joined in and felt part of a great afternoon at the HJC session.

Easter Sunday April 2011 The Schooner Cafe was the venue for an enjoyable get together for those HJC members whom could make it, and the appreciative public whom were treated to the smooth sounds of Nopera on guitar and to the gifted voice of Mahina. Thanks also to Marcel improvising on his flute and saxaphone.. awesome sounds. There were also background jam sounds from a few others, that added to the atmosphere. HJC is also fostering a love of music in the younger folk, whom were mesmerized by 'making music' and comfortable enough to join in, as the feeling was inclusive.. well done, all, and thanks to the cafe for the venue which has great accoustics and views..
We look forward to our next club session day... take care and may the music flow.

March 2011 A keen group of music enthusiasts met at The Copthorne, Omapere on Sunday 27th March to enjoy some great music and each others company. We were treated to a unique blend of Marcel on saxaphone, with special guest, Chris on didgereedoo which was fascinating, listening to the two instruments which require such skillful breath work. Thanks guys! Marcel also performed on the flute and showed real versatility. We thank Olly Knox (Baylys Beach) for joining us and performing some of his wonderful original accoustic works, which he will present in Europe later this year. We wish him well. The afternoon was concluded with everyone invited to join in with a jam session. Diane provided some lovely vocals and Jack Tane snuck in to play some awesome lead guitar.
Thanks to all who performed and played a part in making this afternoon happen.. we look forward to our next HJC get together!

On Sunday 30th Jan The Hokianga Jazz Club presented an afternoon of a variety of excellent jazz and other sounds. Our special invited guests were Lounge Sweet, a talented group of musicians from across Northland.

Local legends Waihongia with Mahina paid tribute to the Hokianga with their music and words..Thanks to all whom participated in open mic. A great afternoon enjoyed by all. The November Hokianga Jazz Club session was once again an afternoon of fun, good times and great music. This event took place on the north side of the harbour at Kohukohu. We thank all who came, those who played and took part, and welcome our new Hokianga Jazz Club members!

Fantastic weather, fantastic venue, fantastic music! Once more it was a real treat for all those whom attended, participated or just enjoyed the various local musicians who contributed to an awesome jazz session. The inclusive atmosphere allowed for an exciting blend of jazz styles. Too many performers to name individually, but all deserved the applause they received!
Thanks to all who came along to support our very own regular jazz club. We know that there were others unable to make it on the day, but you were with us in spirit! Hope to see you next time!

An enjoyable afternoon with a variety of performers and an appreciative audience!

A fabulous afternoon of music was enjoyed by all in the grand dining hall of The Copthorne, Omapere. The event was well attended with at least forty locals and visitors treated to jazz numbers from Waihongia, Shingle Bob and more from Opononi, Rawene, Kohukohu and both shores of the Hokianga Harbour.

... respected Hokianga jazz musician Colin Morman sadly passed away recently.

A beautiful service for Colin was held at Opononi Hall, Monday 26th October 2010 with special memories shared and thanks to all whom so willingly gave their time, music, food to celebrate his life.
Our heartfelt condolences to Gloria and the Morman family and friends.
We shall all miss him dearly. A fine father, husband, friend and musician...may his song play on.......
